Ducks stay mum on recruiting issue, but how long?
The University of Oregon has hired a law firm and large remained mum as questions mount about the payment of $ 25 000 Duck football program to a recruitment service based in Texas.
The NCAA is investigating what appears to be an inflated payment for services provided by so-called street agents Willie Lyles full service scouting in Houston. The question is whether Lyles helped shape a highly recruited player in Oregon.
The silence of Oregon will be difficult to maintain that the football season approaches, such as Ducks draw increasing attention because of their appearance in January of that BCS Championship game.
Oregon went 12-1 last season, falling to Auburn in the championship game. The Ducks were ranked No. 3 in the final AP Top 25. Heisman Trophy finalist LaMichael James led the nation in rushing with 1,731 yards.
How Oregon can build on this success will no doubt take a back seat to the payment of school Lyles as head coach Chip Kelly faces reporters July 26 in Los Angeles during the media day for the pre-season Pac-12 Conference reconfigured.
Kelly has never commented on the issue, which surfaced this spring.
The university last official word came on July 1, when he issued a statement by Rob Mullens, the UO athletic director. The Ducks moved to this statement when asked to comment on this story.
"The University of Oregon Athletic Department has been and will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation by the NCAA," said Mullens.
"Our department is committed to helping the NCAA in any way possible and until their work is done, we are unable to comment further. Oregon athletics remains committed to operating a program of integrity. "
Oregon has recently confirmed that it has retained the legal services of Bond, Schoeneck and King.Former member of the NCAA enforcement staff Michael Glazier leads the firm's collegiate sports group, which became known to represent the school in the face of NCAA infractions.
