Homemade Jamz, the future of the blues, heads for Chesaning Showboat Music ...
CHESANING— Ryan Perry appreciates the irony of his introduction to the blues. In fact, he breaks into a full laugh, sorting it out for himself.It goes something like this: He's the son of a man from Mississippi who really fell in love with the blues when he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea. Young Ryan and his family, his Polynesian mother Tricia, brother Kyle and sister Taya, joined his father Renaud during his next tour of duty in Germany, and that's when he found the knock-off Stratocaster guitar in his dad's bags.
"I was 7 at the time, unloading all his stuff, and I started playing around with it," Ryan said. "I started listening to the blues, too, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Albert King, and figuring out the music."
And after going halfway around the world to discover an American original, Ryan and his brother Kyle performed as a duo before sister Taya picked up a pair of drumsticks and joined them.
As Homemade Jamz Blues Band, they'll join Larry McCray and Thornetta Davis on June 14 in the hospitality tent at the Chesaning Showboat Music Festival.
"These young kids have got energy, talent and do the blues proud with their own flavor," blues legend B.B. King said of the siblings, now 19, 16 and 12. "I believe they've got a great future ahead."
"That was one of the highlights, most definitely, having the chance to play with B.B. King," Ryan said. "Deacon John, too, I love his stuff, and Sheila E."
And the blues masters look on the Perrys as the ones who will preserve the music for future generations. They recognize the depth, even coming from musicians so young, and others seem to agree.
In 2006, the Homemade Jamz Blues Band took top honors at the MS Delta Blues Society of Indianola's Blues Challenge and, in 2007, second place in the International Blues Challenge.
"It's a feeling; you have it or you don't," Ryan said. "If you're just going through the motions, doing it for the money, it doesn't work. But we love the music and the history behind it. We love the culture, and people tell us they get that feeling when they hear us play.
