Fireflies light up the summer evening sky

When I see the first fireflies light up the grass, I use it as a signal that the hummingbirds have gone to bed, so to speak, for the night and it's time to close the curtains and close the windows. I often then have a break for a while and watch the fireflies light waves make their way into the night sky.

At this time of year when it is completely black, I sometimes put on the deck or porch lights to see how many and what kind of moths, they can attract. As I said before, I'm not even close to being a butterfly expert, but from time to time I see one I can really identify. This was the case recently with a three-inch range yellow brown and red with black and white "spots eye" on its hind wing which landed on my arm when I got out before locking the doors.

It was an Io moth, one of the big silk moths, although not nearly as big as a Cecropia and only half as big as Luna, the green light to long tail. The larva, or caterpillar, Io moth is green and covered with strong spines tingling. I often wonder if that's what I stepped on my bare feet a few years ago when suddenly my foot felt like it was on fire.It took time for the pain and redness to go away.

Another of the silkworm moth in the family are five inches wide olive-brown, pink-tinged Ailanthus silkworm moth, which, interestingly, the flies during the day and does not fire. It was introduced in the Philadelphia area of China in the 1800s and saw, as its name indicates, the trees that thrive in ailanthus areas of waste, the old railway yards and along the highways.

Ailanthus trees look a lot like staghorn sumac trees. They can become large, but most of the ones you see are relatively small because of where they grow. There are many of them growing along the main roads and at the moment of their cone-shaped clusters of yellow flowers / green stand out from the ends of their branches.
