Student-led farm thrives in inner-city
KITCHENER — An inner-city high school is growing a sense of safety and community — right alongside the tomatoes, chickens and marigolds being raised in its backyard.
At Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School, a small urban farm is taking shape that is helping students feel better.
Outgoing principal Lila Read says 92 per cent of students now say they feel safe at the school, according to an annual survey conducted by the board. That’s sharply up from 56 per cent who felt safe in 2006.
Read says this is partially because the school builds relationships with its neighbours. From the first day, students meet the pastor at the church next door, the owner of the grocery store across the street and the homeowners all around.
Last week, the school opened a community garden, complete with vegetables, flowers, an herb garden and grape vines, all surrounded by a white picket fence. It was built by teachers and students on city property next to the school, at the corner of Walter and Park Streets.
“It’s a gem in the heart of the city,” said Read. “There’s a lot of sweat equity that has gone into this garden.”
The lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and herbs that are growing there will be tended all summer by students and teachers, and eaten by the people who attend the free supper provided every Wednesday night by St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, on King Street next door to the school. Students also volunteer to help serve that supper.
Read says teenagers reap many benefits from raising food. It’s good for them to care for animals and plants, and they also learn where their food comes from and to respect it.
There are already chickens on the school property, and the eggs are used in the school’s cooking classes. (The chickens are being boarded at a nearby farm over the summer.)
“The kids love it,” said horticulture teacher Pat Rittinger. “The chickens come in the classroom. One has a spot on the bookcase.
